Roofing

What Roofing Material Is the Best in Wisconsin?

For most homeowners, the “best” roofing material depends on

budget, roof slope, and long-term plans.

Quick comparison:

  • Best Overall Value: Architectural Asphalt Shingles

  • Longest Lifespan: Metal, Tile, and Slate

  • Best for flat or low-slope roofs: TPO or EPDM roofing systems

When Deciding to replace your roof, you should consider that cold winters, snow load, ice dams, and freeze–thaw cycles all affect roof performance. That’s why a professional roof inspection is the best way to confirm which roofing material makes sense for your home.   CLICK HERE to schedule your FREE inspection today.

Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt shingles are the most widely used roofing material for residential roof replacement. They’re affordable, reliable, and compatible with most roof designs.

Why homeowners choose asphalt shingles:

  • Lower upfront cost compared to other roofing materials

  • Fast installation timelines

  • Easy to repair if damage occurs later

Things to consider:

  • Lifespan depends on shingle quality and installation

  • Proper attic ventilation is critical for durability

  • Ice and water shield placement matters in cold climates

Asphalt shingles remain the most cost-effective solution for many homeowners needing roof replacement.

Metal Roofing

Metal roofing is a premium roofing material known for longevity and weather resistance. It’s available in standing seam panels or metal shingles that mimic traditional roofing styles.

Advantages of metal roofing:

  • Long service life compared to asphalt shingles

  • Excellent snow and rain shedding

  • Strong performance in high winds

Things to know:

  • Higher upfront investment

  • Installation quality is critical (flashing and fasteners matter)

  • Proper insulation reduces noise concerns

Homeowners planning to stay long-term often choose metal roofing to avoid multiple future roof replacements.

Wood Shakes

Cedar shake roofing:

  • Natural, high-end appearance

  • Requires regular maintenance

  • Less forgiving in wet or icy climates

  • These used to be one of the best options before houses became so airtight.  The lifespan on wood shakes now is significantly less than before because houses were built different and allowed more airflow to the underside of the shakes which helped dry them out.  Now they stay wet and rot prematurely.  Although I love the look of wood shakes, I would not recommend someone to install them unless they understand the costs involved.

Flat Roofs

The Most common materials for flat roofs today are EPDM, TPO, Rolled Roofing, or Torch Down.

  • EPDM or TPO are the best options in Wisconsin with EPDM being a little more affordable.

  • Torch Down is a decent mid-tier option, but has a shorter lifespan.

  • Rolled roofing I would only recommend for very short term use or sheds, becuase it is very prone to leaks, but it is the cheapest option.
